I am a police officer and my friend who also works LAPD was on duty when the emergency call came out about a "animal cruelty/citizen following a trailer filled with dogs". Watch the video Some of this is private and I ask that you not share certain things. Anyhow to make a long story short, I was at the South Los Angeles Shelter when the dogs were brought to the evidence area. I saw Lucille for about 30 seconds in her cage. She looked at me with eyes that were so sad I cant even quite describe it [and I have seen an awful lot]. The left side of her face was torn up with bite wounds, she was in awful condition. She looked like she had never had a caress or kind word in her life. I thought I would never see her again. Animal control officers [using poles, ugh] loaded her and the rest of the evidence dogs up and took them to other shelters. I hadnt even had time to get her impound number.... I remember the shock I felt when I opened an email and saw her face in a plea that Lori of Downtown Dog Rescue sent out to try to save her. I knew I had to get her out. The first day that I picked Lucille up from the shelter, she was so happy. She couldn't believe she was getting treated so well. She couldn't believe she was going for a walk! Getting a belly rub! OMG getting really good food and LOVE: the first night she panicked when I left her alone in the downstairs bedroom [I have 5 dogs of my own with issues and have to keep fosters separate] and she started barking and crying. My boyfriend slept with her that fist night. She finally calmed down and realized she wasnt being left and that we were coming back and there have been no issues with her since. She is alone a lot as I work full time and is very calm and quiet. She is a sweetheart. She is great and gentle and loving with kids. She has been good with the dogs I have allowed her to meet: I have tried to keep her away from rougher dogs who might try to paw her as she has been so brutally attacked previously [half her tongue was bitten off by another dog]. I do think she could do great in a multiple dog household---she lived at the old Cesar Milan facilty which was busted when it was took over by an abuser with other dogs [I can give you more details by phone but please dont share this as it is currently in the courts]. She actually seems happy and excited by other dogs....but I know that excitement can turn into something else with the wrong dog so have kept her from younger hyper dogs....she has no teeth so I am more afraid that she would get hurt.
